Summer Activities for Seniors and Caregivers

Summer Activities for Seniors and Caregivers

Being outside in the beautiful warm summer temperatures does not have to end for our seniors and caregivers.  As seniors, it can be challenging to find activities that are both enjoyable and suitable for their needs and abilities.  With some creative planning it is possible.  It will be beneficial to switch up the routine and to get out of the house.

The Benefits of Getting outside

There are a lot of advantages for heading outside, even if for a short period of time to soak up the sun. Soaking up some sunshine is a great source of Vitamin D which helps for a healthy brain, bones and muscles. Getting out of the house also helps seniors interact and socialize. It can be beneficial for their mental and emotional well-being.

Ideas for Outdoor activities

When it comes to picking activities for your loved ones, focus on their hobbies, interests and what they used to enjoy doing or even try something new. Have a couple of suggestions prepared to choose from and heat outside and enjoy the day together.

Catch a sporting event- Watching a grandchild's game or attending a professional game can be an action packed way to reconnect with loved ones.

Fish for fun- Fishing from a dock, pier or a location that can be found that allows our seniors with mobility problems or use a wheelchair to get around.

Taking a dip or a swim- Swimming is an excellent form of exercise that is less strenuous on seniors bodies and muscles.

Stroll around- Getting outside for a walk or taking your pet to the park is a great form of exercise that can be set at your own pace. Allowing you to rest and get some sunshine, which is a great source of vitamin D

Picnic outdoors- Going on picnics is a great way to allow flexibility. Going on a picnic on the grounds of a Long-Term Care Facility, in your own backyard or at a park.  When picking your picnic location make sure you are able to sit in the shade or if not make sure you are able to bring an umbrella.

Go out for a treat- Taking a loved one to have something to eat at one of their favorite places.  Going out for a special treat “Just because” is alway great for our mental and emotional well being.  It could be going for a coffee, an ice cream and a pastry.  Weather permitting they could always enjoy their treat at an outdoor patio or by the water (if nearby).

It is important to keep in mind that older bodies may struggle more to adjust to temperature changes, and may not perceive thirst as our younger bodies used to.  Keep an eye out for signs of fatigue, thirst, sunburn and overheating. If you do this would be a great time to head back home and promise to return at another date.
