Knowing When to Get Help

Knowing When to Get Help

The majority of people view independence and privacy as essential components of a comfortable life. We all have unique habits and our own way of doing things, and life has a natural flow that matches our personalities. However, as we or our loved ones age and experience physical changes, we may find ourselves struggling to manage those changes effectively. Eventually, we begin to question when it's the right time to seek help.

The good news is we do not have to guess. There are some common indicators that help us tell when it’s time to get some help.  Amy's Helping Hands can help you determine when it's time to get help for your loved ones. We take the guesswork out of it and provide specialized in-home care that is tailored to their specific needs.

Physical Condition

Has a recent medical diagnosis impacted your daily activities or those of a loved one? We're here to help with tasks such as dressing, grooming, shaving, toileting, and eating.

Personal Care

Hygiene Checklist

  • Bathing: Are regular baths or showers being taken? Is the frequency appropriate for the individual's needs and preferences?
  • Body Odor: Is there any noticeable body odor that may indicate inadequate bathing or other health issues?
  • Oral Care: Are teeth being brushed regularly? Is denture care being provided if applicable? Is there any evidence of bad breath or oral health problems?
  • Hair Care: Is hair being washed regularly? Is the hair clean and free of tangles or mats?
  • Incontinence Care: If the individual is experiencing incontinence, are appropriate products being used? Are they being changed regularly and correctly to prevent skin irritation and infection?
  • Nail Care: Are nails trimmed and clean? Are there any signs of fungal infections or other nail problems?
  • Skin Care: Is the skin clean and dry? Are there any signs of redness, irritation, or pressure sores?
  • Shaving: If applicable, is shaving being done safely and with proper hygiene?
  • Menstrual Care: For menstruating individuals, are appropriate products being used and changed regularly?
  • Foot Care: Are feet clean and dry? Are toenails trimmed and free of ingrown nails or fungal infections?

Driving

Has driving become more difficult, uncertain, or scary?

  • Have your reflexes and decision-making slowed down?
  • Have you noticed any new dings, dents, or scratches on your vehicle?

Driving can be one of the most challenging adjustments for seniors due to the loss of independence. Unfortunately, it can also become the most dangerous, which is why it's important to evaluate your driving abilities as you age.

Nutrition

Is your loved one’s weight stable? Are they eating regularly and nutritiously?  Is the refrigerator properly stocked with a variety of foods? Is the fridge filled with expired food?  With Amy’s Helping Hands our caregiver can help with the shopping, meal prep and making sure your loved ones are getting the nutrition they need
